The adventure begins in Salvador de Bahia, a city with a very exciting history. This is where the slaves from Africa were brought in to work in the sugar plantations and even today the city still holds a lot of African culture. Here is full of life, music, song and dance that will follow you wherever you go.
From Salvador, the tour continues to Chapada Diamantina National Park, where you can enjoy the beautiful landscape, experience huge caves, swim in emerald blue springs and waterfalls and visit picturesque small villages. Know more about Brazil on diseaseslearning.
The next great experience begins in Lençóis Maranhense National Park with its wonderful and special landscape of dunes and lagoons. You travel along the coast through small fishing communities and eventually end up in Jericoacoara, a small charming town where both beach and surfing opportunities are plentiful.
We have included transports and excursions including English speaking guide and overnight stays on charming pousadors.
Day 1: Departure from Scandinavia
Departure from Scandinavia to Salvador, where you will arrive the next day. Depending on the airline, there will be one to two stopovers along the way.
Day 2: Arrival in Salvador
Upon arrival in Salvador, you will be picked up at the airport and driven to your pousada not far from the historic district of Pelourinho. The area is known for its Portuguese colonial architecture with lots of historical monuments and well-preserved churches. The district is today part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The majority of the people in the state of Bahia are descended from slaves who were once shipped across the Atlantic to work on plantations. This has resulted in a fusion of the Afro-Brazilian culture and the formation of the Candomblé religion practiced in the form of voodoo and the slave dance capoeira.
Day 3: On a voyage of discovery in Salvador
You have the whole day on your own to explore Salvador. Visit Sao Joaquim’s authentic market, stroll along the cobbled streets of Pelourinho, get an insight into the history of the slave trade and the city at the Museo Afro-Brasileiro, sample African-inspired regional cuisine and experience capoeira at the city’s largest market, Mercado Modelo. Day 4: Salvador to Lençóis (Chapada Dimantina)
Today you will be picked up and driven to the bus station in Salvador. Here you will continue by bus to the city of Lençóis, where you will again be accommodated in a cozy pousada. Lençóis is a nice town in Chapada Diamantina, a national park comparable to the Grand Canyon in the United States. It is a mixture of high mountains, rivers, waterfalls, caves and fantastic landscapes that you have the opportunity to enjoy and experience the next few days on various day trips. ( F )
Day 5: On an adventure to Iraquara’s caves
After breakfast you will be picked up by your local guide who will take you on a day trip to Iraquara. Here you visit the many mountain rooms and caves that exist around the city. You start with a visit to Pratinha, a huge limestone cave where you can snorkel in a crystal clear freshwater spring. From here you move on to another beautiful limestone cave, Lapa Doce, whose “specialty” is its enormous stalactites and rock formations. Lunch is enjoyed at the local restaurant before heading to Mount Morro do Pai Inácio, where you can expect stunning views of the Chapada Dimantina from the top. Enjoy the sunset up here before heading back to Lençóis. ( F , L )
Day 6: Trekking trip to Cachoeira da Fumaça, Brazil‘s highest waterfall
You will be picked up in the morning by your local guide and driven to the Capão Valley, from where you trek six kilometers to the top of Cachoeira da Fumaça, Brazil’s highest waterfall at 340 meters. You will have plenty of time to enjoy the view before heading back to Lençóis. ( F , L )
Day 7: Chapada Diamantina and Vale do Capão
The day offers a visit to the two impressive limestone caves Poço Encantado and Poço Azul. In Poço Azul you can rent snorkel gear and enjoy a dip in the crystal clear waters with a view of up to 60 meters. After a swim, enjoy a traditional lunch before returning to Lençóis. ( F , L )
Day 8: Departure from Salvador to São Luis
Today the trip goes to Salvador bus station, after which you drive to Salvador airport and fly to the city of São Luis de Maranhão. Here you will be picked up and driven to your hotel. ( F )
Day 9: On an adventure in Lençóis Maranhense National Park
From São Luis, continue your journey with the guide via the Emotion Trail through Lençóis Maranhense National Park. Here you get the opportunity to see some of the most special landscapes in northeastern Brazil. Lençóis Maranhense National Park is an ecosystem formed by white dunes with lagoons filled with rainwater. The area covers 1500 square meters and despite a lot of rain there is almost no vegetation here. This area is not yet known by too many tourists and is incredibly beautiful. You spend most of the day in the park and enjoy a beautiful sunset before being driven to your pousada in Barreirinhas. ( F )
Day 10: Speedboat trip on the Rio Preguiças to Atins
Today, the Emotion Trail continues to the cozy coastal town of Atins. After breakfast you can go speedboat on the river Rio Preguiças, where you get the opportunity to see the beautiful dunes and visit the nice little fishing communities. Then the tour continues to the town of Atins, where you can enjoy the beach and have a nice swim. ( F )
Day 11: Atins to Parnaiba
In the morning, the tour continues to Parnaíba via 4WD drive and you arrive in the afternoon. The tour goes via Caburé Beach in Paulino Neves with its beautiful dunes. (F)
Day 12: Parnaiba to Jericoacoara
The day begins with a boat trip on the Parnaíba Delta (Brave Feijão), where you stop at Igarapé dos Poldros, Baia do Feijão, Ilha das Canárias and Morro Branco. At noon, the 4WD tour goes the last stretch of the Emotion Trail along the paved road surrounded by the beautiful dunes and after two ferry rides you arrive in the charming coastal town of Jericoacoara. The city is known for its beautiful beaches and spectacular sunsets. Here you live in a pousada and relax for the next few days. ( F )
Day 13: Buggy to Blue Lagoon
The day begins with a buggy ride to the Blue Lagoon, after which you have the day on your own in Jericoacoara. ( F )
Day 14: Surfing and total relaxation in Jericoacoara
You have the day on your own in Jericoacoara, where you have the opportunity to see even more of the beautiful countryside or just enjoy the atmosphere of this city that has its very own pace. It is also possible to take horseback riding, yoga classes and surf – both in water and on sand. ( F )
Day 15: Departure from Jericoacoara to Fortaleza
Today you will be picked up at the hotel and driven to Fortaleza Airport, where you will head back to Scandinavia. ( F )
Day 16: Arrival in Scandinavia
Arrival in Scandinavia after two weeks of fantastic round trip in northern Brazil.
