Test: Amplifier, NAD C 316 BEE

The NAD C-316 BEE looks 315 BEE confusingly similar to its predecessor not only, but also memories of the father of all budget-high end amplifier, the NAD 3020.

Inflation he is also priced approximately, where his famous predecessor 1979: 350 euro (formerly there were nearly 300 marks) all the way down in the price list – and at the top of the appreciation of all those audiophiles that don’t count to the FDP clientele.

A live view processing shows that not everything was previously better,: outdoor shows in the nondescript plastic look, C 316 BEE consistently best behind the scenes material from the massive toroidal transformer (more on that in the caption) of the cast heatsink up towards to the encapsulated ALPS bright, which offers not only excellent performance, but also a very high life expectancy. The circuit itself looks easy, but refined been worked out and brought an amazingly great performance bandwidth at the same time very low noise and distortion values the small amp.

Which is mechanically how metro logically NAD C 316 BEE so far superior to his ancestors. And he sounds even better, if one does not attempt subsequently to seal the imperfections of the old classic as strengths. You could live the gentle pulps in the orchestral tutti or sometimes something Samantha-bass – so initially just fine, and eventually was convinced that belongs to. Nostalgia-free the C considered 316 but much deeper insight into the musical event conveys.

The author pushed a virtual LP in the playlist of the Linn Akurate DSas a suitable test music for the NAD time machine: “axxess & ACE” songs: Ohia (cargo) in a homemade 24 bit/48 kHz vinyl transfer, which actually (which do not always succeed) even more beautiful and richer sounds excellent CD version.

At the beginning of “love and work” it was no question of who plays what instrument where then via NAD: clearly defined front in the middle of the body and the vibrating strings of the acoustic guitar, full rear right and left a wreath of clamps and a Hi-Hat, which beat time times times perfectly synchronously, with minimal offset. A tiny little negligence, as she roughly did the Marantz PM-5400, let the two percussion instruments resemble each other so that a distinction was difficult.

The above may sound academic, but increases with ease, with the spiritual eye to find your way in the sound, the suggestive power of music: you can feel the tense calm during the first bars, can be captured instead of at worst to lose interest and press “skip”.

The direct comparison with the technically almost identical predecessor NAD C 315 BEE revealed even after generous break-in period no harmony, but – as a result of only less minor component changes – a clear move towards even more fine resolution and transparency in the new. The differences were not large enough to make the jump to the next higher level of 5 then however.
