The housing of the small Kiso acoustic HB 1 (13800 euro) can swing like an instrument. And thus gives her a unique natural music reproduction.

There are many ways to back up the malice of his fellow men. As a Hi-Fi fan you get this in two ways. Either is there a lot of money for a source device – or for a small speaker in relation to the remaining system. If the latter even with thin walls is realized in lightweight design, you can be sure that you thus reap skeptical views in the most benign case. Anbiedern is no reason to buy the Kiso HB 1 for 13_800 euros. But what would be the incentive?
On Kiso founder Toru Hara has a pragmatic answer: because he follows the instrument-making approach in the Kiso, a sonically fascinating speaker was created. Now you must know that Hara is a designated audiophile (see interview), which many systems calls his own. He was not unaware that which builds guitar construction company Takamine for Onkyo speaker enclosure in the same place (Sakashita), which resonate like instruments. The concept he found interesting and visited the production; It was launched for the Kiso project.
But already the first experiments showed how complex the issue is. Because matching drivers and crossover had to be developed to the frame. Here, relied not only on his experience Hara, but brought developers like Jonathan Carr by Lyra on board. With computer programs, such a case is difficult to calculate. Therefore led the development of many prototype, since such housing much more than classic wooden boxes affect the built chassis and depending on the Assembly require a different vote.
Body and chassis are one unit at the Kiso
After long attempts, the team found a combination of a peerless bass-midrange speaker and a heavily modified Fostex Horn, whose Horn attachment and phase peg Takamine manufacturing ebony. The transition, which sets the crossover with appropriately high-quality components, certain Hara at unusual 5 kilohertz, which transmits all instrument tone of the low-midrange driver and tweeter for the harmonics is responsible, which determine the timbre. The high frequency produces a very steady, targeted radiation in combination with the HF Horn also and thus ensures the fantastic image accuracy.
The case itself has a guitar-like body with 2.5 to 3.2 Milimeter thin sides and back from mahogany, as well as a more massive front made of rosewood. That the Kiso also in the series of the best instrument makers is made, shows the high standards.
Different woods for different sound
Reminiscent of the construction of the instrument also, variants of Maple and Hawaiian Acacia (KOA) are planned in addition to the standard version of mahogany, which have a slightly different sound direction. A cable, clean assemblies (depending on the customer request up to 6 metres in length), which is used for the internal wiring is included.
And also the first listening comparisons, which by the way happened in the stereoplay listening room as well as in a smaller Living room were the cables. The Kiso string decided this passage for themselves: tonally, she brought the most homogeneous appearance hardly details contracted even when compared to the reference cables.
It was amazing that the lanky HB could deliver significant levels and bass pressure 1 large even in the 40 Square meter stereoplay-listening room: the speaker is small, but not sound. Of course, the HB 1 could celebrate no level messy, and it lacked the lowest octaves in the bass. For this, the bass range, she gave was very cleanly contoured and extremely quick off the mark. Great Orchestra sounded amazing of course.
In addition, the Kiso had the amazing ability to work out the tonal characteristics of the instruments in complex passages, as even more expensive and excellent in this point speakers such as about the Magico v3 (6/08) were not quite so clearly.
Another intriguing was the large-scale representation of the HB conjured up 1 Studios and concert halls in the listening room. It’s recommended to angle the Kiso so that an equilateral triangle was formed approximately 1 meter from the listening position. So, not only the focus of inspiring sharp instruments, but also the sound balance was perfectly balanced.
The tester on the basis of these properties were already excited, a hallmark of the HB joined 1 – their musical fortunes of differentiation. Almost even more clearly than the large reference boxes, the small Kiso worked out the tonal characteristics of upstream devices. Also she could even mediocre shots elicit so many musical subtleties, that each hearing the record collection became a true journey of discovery.
An example of this is the live recording of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” (Cetra LO 18). Despite the moderate sound quality, the Kiso makes it an experience: how fervently Maria sings Callas here, Di Stefano is not for you to expression and Herbert von Karajan drives the Orchestra and chorus of La Scala to perform.
Now you could imply that the HB 1 to flourish only with such historical recordings. Far from and easily refuted with Jack of Johnson’s “Banana Pancake”. Even his voice sounded over the Kiso unique of course and proved so that these speakers are unparalleled.
