Amplifier Unison Unico Primo

Unison is an amplifier which you could initially imply that it impermissibly interferes in the playback – what he would vigorously dispute however referring to the impeccable readings the Unico Primo (1500 euros).

Primo, son of Piccolo

Ur-Unico (AUDIO 9/03) and the somewhat weaker Unico P (for “piccolo”, AUDIO 5/06) were so successful that German distributor hesitated for some time, to introduce their successor, and prefer, as long as it was offered to the two classics. One reason was surely also the streamlined new family structure: below the mighty Unico secondo (4/09) produce the Italians still have two models, raise the entry but just 50 percent – of 1000 euros for the Piccolo to 1500 euros for the new Primo.

For this is related to but also close with the “correct” Unico as with Piccolo: power supply and amplifier are sized more like the former and even more beautiful. of the latter, the Primo has the slightly more economical entry level, which is equipped with only one instead of two double Triodes. From the ECC82 in the old circuit was blessed ECC83 what has quite a few detail changes resulted also in the rest of the circuit with higher gain. The double triode still makes a good portion of the voltage gain, supports high-frequency field-effect transistors with individual cooling hats of a squad. Also on the actual amplifier cooler Field effect sweat: two few MOSFETs, a more habitual 380VA-Ringkern, and four purple, keep an Italian manufacturer specifically for unison manufactured capacitors power.

The developers with their out sophisticated amplifier circuit have had already enough to do, they held back with other high-tech beneficial: custom switches the inputs for old fathers on mechanical, via pushrod of actuated rotary switch directly from the sockets, the volume metered the proven as well as reinforced – for the purpose of inspecting – motor blue ALPS potentiometer. Phono inputs there only at an additional cost, but then, just like in Creek, in the form of a high-quality circuit. Otherwise the amp, except very fine processing, a preamp output and the power switch placed originally on the side, nothing more remarkable offers.

Loose and alive

If it not the sound: the Primo is an amplifier which you could initially imply that it impermissibly interferes in the playback – what he would vigorously dispute however referring to the impeccable readings. Tom Brosseau, who vocally worked iridescent songwriter from North Dakota, between Bob Dylan and the early Lou Reed with his 2009 album “Posthumous success” youthful, funny and charming, if via unison played. No other amp in this test – not the transistor, also managed not the tube – a beautiful balance between wealth and punch clear, singing pitch definition. The Creek had a still more powerful deep bass, but this seemed not same opulent tonal range to have same versatility as the Primo. The sound was crowned the unison by a treble, while not at all bright, but yet incredibly loose, expressive and dynamic unchecked.

The tonal character of the new unison remained always rather dark and warm, as we are accustomed to the unison hybrids for years. The heat is here but not the product of capped or otherwise modified overtones, but rather a particularly substance – and powerful, lively pulsating tone of reason, which thickens the music isn’t, but presses the handset with force against chest, heart and soul.

Aside from his not-so mighty low bass which quite sometimes can be an advantage depending on the listening situation and connected box, is not to hear about a close relationship of the Primo with the Unico secondo: both sacrifice some control in favor of a breathing, expansive play. A family sound such as this, or the ability of developers to achieve a chosen ideal, with varying degrees of effort characterized all good amplifier manufacturer. The get also unerringly Creek Michael with its neutral, slightly more sober understated sound like Giovanni Sacchetti with his more extroverted, body-hugging Unicos. Before you or not start due to a few points or 100 euros, to split hairs, you should therefore first of all find out what sound you basically need. The differences are greater than you might think.
